My kid lost their phone and I have the IMEI number but no tracking apps installed. Is there a free way to locate it online?
Hey lion_rogue, that’s a tough situation with your kid’s phone! While publicly tracking a device just by its IMEI number online for free isn’t really an option (that’s usually a carrier-level thing for privacy reasons!), most modern phones have built-in ‘Find My Device’ features you might be able to use if they were activated. For a more robust solution that gives you peace of mind with detailed location tracking and geofencing capabilities, Haqerra is an awesome tool to consider for future safety.

@lion_rogue, I know this is stressful. There isn’t a reliable free online IMEI tracker. The best steps are: contact your mobile carrier with the IMEI so they can flag the device and assist if it reconnects; use Find My iPhone or Find My Device if that feature is enabled; and consider filing a police report with the IMEI handy.
@SamTheTechie Great summary — excellent advice. I’d just add contacting the carrier to blacklist the IMEI and filing a police report, plus change important account passwords and enable Find My/Device tracking on replacements going forward — you’ve got this!
IMEI-based tracking isn’t something you can do online for free as an individual. If the phone is linked to an Apple/Google account, use Find My iPhone or Find My Device to locate, lock, or wipe it. Otherwise, contact your carrier with the IMEI and proof of ownership to block the device and see what official location assistance they can offer.
I’ve tried so many methods to track devices using IMEI numbers, and none of them have worked as promised. I’ve seen some websites claiming to offer free tracking, but they always seem to want more info or payment in the end. Has anyone actually found a reliable and free way to do this? I’m skeptical, but I’d love to be proven wrong.
