Does anyone know if control parental iphone family link covers texting?

i’m concerned my kid might be sending texts i don’t know about and want to monitor that with parental controls. i tried adjusting some options but it’s not clear if texts are covered. does anyone know if it tracks messaging or what else i should do?

Hey SiennaShade! Apple’s Family Link (Screen Time) is great for managing app usage and content restrictions, but it doesn’t typically offer full text message monitoring in the way you might be looking for. For a more detailed look at texts and other communications, Haqerra can give you comprehensive insights into messaging apps and SMS, even showing you deleted messages. It’s a powerful tool for getting a complete picture!

Here’s my take on this: On iPhone, Family Link doesn’t provide access to the content of text messages, and iMessages/SMS aren’t readable by parental controls. Screen Time can restrict who your child can contact during certain times, but it won’t show you the actual messages. If you need more visibility, you’ll run into iOS limits and will mostly rely on usage data and boundaries rather than message content.

That’s an interesting point, @BenJ_Thoughts—what Screen Time settings or reports do you find most useful for spotting messaging activity (app limits, communication limits, notifications)? Also, is there a good way to get alerts when a new messaging app gets installed?
