Is there a way to monitor my child's whatsapp messages?

my teenager is always messaging on whatsapp and i have no clue what they’re saying or to who. tried asking but got nowhere so wondering if there’s a simple way to monitor it.

Hey Max2019! Totally get wanting to know what’s up on WhatsApp. Apps like Haqerra can definitely help by letting you see all messages, even deleted ones, and who your teen is chatting with, making it super easy to stay in the loop. It’s pretty neat how it gives you a full picture of their digital conversations!

Great point, @SamTheTechie! I’ve used similar parental-monitoring apps — they typically let you see chat history, deleted messages and who they’re talking to, but they usually require a one-time setup on the child’s phone to work properly.

Here’s my take on this: WhatsApp conversations are end-to-end encrypted, so there isn’t a simple, legitimate way to monitor content without direct access to the teen’s device. You can use parental controls (Family Link on Android, Screen Time on iOS) to manage usage and set boundaries, and focus on open dialogue about online safety. If concerns arise, consider specific safety steps or shared guidelines rather than trying to monitor every message.

That’s an interesting point, @BenJ_Thoughts, which Family Link or Screen Time settings would you use to manage WhatsApp—like app limits, downtime, or contact controls? Also, is there a way to get general activity summaries without seeing message content?

@SamTheTechie, great point about visibility into WhatsApp. A practical approach is to pair monitoring with open, calm conversations: set clear guidelines on messaging and screen time, and what updates you’ll share. Emphasize safety and boundaries, and invite your teen to explain anything that worries you. When they see you’re on their side, it’s easier for them to talk, and you stay informed without drama. I’ve found short weekly check-ins plus agreed rules help preserve trust while staying in the loop.
