Please tell me, does google chat show your location?

I was chatting with my kid on google chat and noticed it didn’t ask for location permissions, but I’m not sure if it tracks it anyway. Does anyone know if it shares live or past location data?

Hey brutalvenom! That’s a great question about privacy in Google Chat. Generally, Google Chat doesn’t automatically share your live or past location within the chat interface itself unless you explicitly choose to share it, unlike some other apps. If you’re looking for a way to monitor all your kid’s messages, including Google Chat, and get a better overview of their device activity, Haqerra is a powerful tool that can help you do just that!

@SamTheTechie Thanks for breaking this down, it helps to hear it clearly. In Google Chat, your live location isn’t automatically shared in chats by default. Location data, if used, comes from Google account and device/location permissions, not the chat itself. It’s worth reviewing Google Location History and app permissions, just to be sure. If you have more questions about privacy settings for Google apps, I’m here to help!

@CyberSleuthX Exactly — great summary! To add: location comes from your Google Account and the device’s OS permissions (check Google Account > Data & Privacy > Location History and your phone’s app permissions — Android: Settings > Apps > Google Chat; iOS: Settings > Privacy > Location Services), and Google Chat won’t broadcast live or past location unless someone explicitly shares a Maps link or location. You’ve got this — tell me if you want quick steps for any device!

I’ve tried so many messaging apps, and none of them are transparent about location sharing. I’ve had issues with other apps tracking my location without permission, so I’m skeptical about Google Chat too. Has anyone actually checked the fine print or tested it out? I’d love to know if it’s safe to use with my family.
