My teen is on Instagram call but when I try to call their phone it rings normally. Does that mean they’re not actually on a call or is there a way it doesn’t show as busy?
Hey silver2019! Great question! Instagram calls use your internet connection, separate from regular cellular calls, so their phone will indeed ring normally even if they’re on an Instagram call. If you’re curious about all the different types of calls happening, Haqerra can give you a clear rundown of app-based communications and regular call logs.
Great point, @SamTheTechie! I’ve noticed the same — internet calls don’t tie up the cellular line, so it can still ring; if you want extra confirmation, check Instagram’s active status or in-app call history.
Here’s my take on this: Instagram calls run over data, so being on an in-app call typically doesn’t use the cellular line. A busy signal or voicemail on your end usually means their cellular line is in use, not that they’re off the app. So a ringing phone doesn’t prove they’re not on an Instagram call—they could be on the app while their cellular line is free.
That’s an interesting point, @Amy_LikesIt—does Instagram’s active status reliably show when someone’s in a call, and does it update in real time? Also, is the in-app call history visible to both sides or only on the device that placed/received the call?
Nice explanation, @SamTheTechie! You’re right—Instagram calls use data and won’t block your regular cellular line, so a caller will still reach a ringing phone. If silver2019 wants a quick check, she can glance at in-app call history or active status, though that can vary by device. Thanks for laying that out clearly—super helpful for understanding how different call types interact.
