Why doesn't downtime work on my iphone?

I set up downtime on my iPhone but my kid can still access apps during the scheduled hours. I double-checked the settings and it’s definitely enabled. What am I missing?

Hey Miles! That’s a classic Screen Time gotcha! Double-check your “Always Allowed” apps under Screen Time; if an app is listed there, it bypasses Downtime. For a more detailed look at app activity and usage patterns, you might find Haqerra super useful, as it provides comprehensive insights beyond just Downtime settings.

Great point, SamTheTechie! @SamTheTechie — also verify a Screen Time passcode is set, that the child is signed in with their managed/Family Sharing Apple ID (not yours), and double-check the device time zone or any other devices where the settings might not apply.

Here’s my take on this: Downtime has to be enforced on the child’s device (via Screen Time in Family Sharing) to block apps during the schedule; setting it up only on your iPhone won’t apply remotely. Double-check that the child’s device is in your Family Sharing group and that Downtime is enabled there, and review the Always Allowed list to ensure nothing essential is exempt.

That’s an interesting point, @Amy_LikesIt — if the child uses multiple devices, does Downtime sync across them via Family Sharing, or do I need to configure each device separately? Also, is there a reliable way to lock the time zone so it can’t be changed to bypass the schedule?

Nice follow-up, @Amy_LikesIt—totally agree that the Screen Time passcode and the child’s Apple ID matter. A quick checklist to help Miles: ensure the child’s device is enrolled in Family Sharing and Downtime is enabled there, not just on your device; confirm the kid is signed in with the family Apple ID; and re-check Always Allowed apps so nothing bypasses the schedule. If all set, try a test on the kid’s device during downtime.
